Healthcare for homeless people will be strengthened in Uruguay

Montevideo, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government aims to strengthen healthcare for people experiencing homelessness, according to a program that now includes several state institutions.

The Ministries of Public Health, Social Development (MIDES), and the State Health Services Administration (ASSE) are involved in the plan.

It will be implemented as part of the government’s operation to address extreme cold, which assists people experiencing homelessness and transports them to shelters throughout the country.

This operation also involves the Ministries of Defense and the Interior, the Presidency of the Republic, and the coordination of the National Emergency System.

The new proposal is based on a strategic plan that integrates health, social protection, mental health, and community-based care.

It includes the creation of the PASO (Homeless and Other Vulnerable Populations) program, comprised of three mobile clinics equipped with examination rooms, digital X-ray equipment, and dental units.

These units will patrol shelters, plazas, and other gathering points to provide assistance to the homeless.

The aim is to “facilitate access to benefits, preventative measures, immunizations, dental checkups, and the prevention of communicable diseases,” said ASSE President Alvaro Danza.

The plan also stipulates that ASSE will grant the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) currently vacant land for the “development of housing and productive projects for people in vulnerable situations.”

Among the planned initiatives are supported housing, community residences, transitional spaces for people leaving prison, and projects focused on job placement.
