“A revolution is underway in the northern West Bank, where settlers are working to realize their dreams in settlements that were evacuated 20 years ago,” the newspaper warned, alluding to the so-called disengagement plan of 2005.
In that year, then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered the evacuation of Jewish settlements in Gaza Strip and five located in the northern West Bank region.
The publication emphasized that the new projects threaten to displace tens of thousands of Palestinians from their lands.
Military sources, cited by Haaretz, warned that high-ranking officers in the Armed Forces believe such measures could trigger a conflict in the region.
The newspaper claimed that settler representatives within Benjamin Netanyahu’s government are gaining political advantages, while the army permits and supports these actions.
The Arabic daily Asharq Al-Awsat recently reported that Israel has approved the construction of 103 Jewish settlements in the West Bank since December 2022, when Netanyahu returned to power.
It highlighted that the government allocated a budget of 19 billion shekels (approximately $6.3 billion) for this purpose. Most of these settlements are new, except for four that were evacuated in 2005 during Sharon’s presidency, the newspaper noted.
