Breathing the World: Havana celebrates the millennial pulse of yoga

Havana, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) Like a shared heartbeat between cultures, Havana's Sports City Coliseum hosted the celebration of International Yoga Day, where body and spirit met in a single breath. Under the motto “Yoga for Sound Aging,” the Embassy of India in Cuba, in collaboration with the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), organized an event that transcended physical routine to become an act of collective harmony, guided by Master Eduardo Pimentel, who led each movement as if it were a note in the score of balance.

The lighting of the ceremonial lamp marked the beginning of the twelfth edition of a celebration that is no longer an isolated symbol, but a living current that flows through more than 190 countries since that 2014 UN General Assembly resolution, promoted by India and supported by 175 nations, including Cuba, where the practice has taken root with remarkable ease.

Active yoga practitioners displayed postures that seemed to converse with time itself, reaffirming that yoga, more than a physical discipline, is a bridge between generations and cultures, a timeless practice that thrives in the diversity of the contemporary world.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of India to Cuba, His Excellency T. Armstrong Changsan, defined yoga as “an invaluable gift from the ancient Indian tradition” and emphasized that it embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action, moving beyond the simple notion of exercise to position it as an integral tool in modern life.

In his remarks to Prensa Latina, the diplomat emphasized that the practice “has found fertile ground in Cuba,” where it aligns with the island’s commitment to preventative healthcare.

He described it as one of the many expressions of the bilateral relationship, which has become a universal language of human connection and a contemporary form of cultural diplomacy.
