The statement warns that the OAS has scheduled a high-level meeting for June 22 in Panama City, and expresses its “huge concern” on it because along this year, the US government has intensified reprisals on Cuba as part of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade it has imposed for more than six decades, adding an oil embargo and the threat of a military invasion against this sovereign nation.
“Bolivia, in this confrontation,” the document adds, “has historically maintained a line of defense of the right of peoples to their free self-determination.
It is worth remembering that, at the 1962 OAS session in Punta del Este, Uruguay, when the expulsion of Cuba from that organization was approved, Bolivia, along with five other nations, abstained from voting in favor of that decision.”
The document also notes that, in recent years, Bolivians have profitted from Cuba’s solidarity, which has resulted in the eradication of illiteracy and healthcare assistance that has benefited millions of people in remote areas that the Bolivian state itself has never been able to reach.
Regarding Trump’s aggressive plans on Cuba, solidarity activists remember that the White House chief recently labeled the Caribbean nation a “threat to U.S. national security.” Therefore, they argue, Trump is seeking legitimacy from governments in the region and intends to use the OAS meeting to create a false perception of support for this adventure.
“As Bolivians who aspire to peaceful coexistence without impositions on our people, we ask the national government NOT TO SUPPORT this new imposition by the U.S. government,” the members of the MBSC stated.
