Israel stalls US-Iran rapprochement, Turkey says

Ankara, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) Turkey's Ministry of Defense identified Israel as the main obstacle to reconciliation between the United States and Iran and called for a halt to its policies.

According to statements made to journalists and reported by the local agency Anadolu, the Turkish military high command affirmed that the bilateral dialogue opened in June is positive, though it warned that Tel Aviv’s actions in the region threaten to derail any easing of tensions.

“We welcome the agreement between the United States and Iran and trust that the parties will act responsibly in the technical negotiations. However, Israel (…) remains the most serious obstacle to reconciliation,” the Turkish military body noted in its statement.   The official note added that, to prevent attempts to undermine this negotiation process, the international community must adopt a much firmer stance against Israeli policy and take concrete steps to curb its aggression in the area.

Last June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum stipulating an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. A technical round of talks was held on the 21st of this month in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, and the US Senate has already approved a resolution to end the war against the Islamic Republic.

International analysts consulted here emphasize that Turkey’s position seeks to strengthen its role as a mediator in the crisis while simultaneously pressuring NATO to make its military and diplomatic support for Israel conditional.

Geopolitics experts believe that Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government is seizing this moment to distance itself from Tel Aviv’s hardline stance and demand that the White House align its rhetoric on peace with the strategic agreements it maintains with the Israeli cabinet, amidst an increasingly complex regional landscape.
