In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed air operations during the ear morning against 10 Iranian military targets in the region, in response, according to its version, to a drone attack against the oil tanker M/T Kiku.
In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced attacks against eight US military installations in the region, including the Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
The escalation comes amid growing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy trade.
In June, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding that stipulated a cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the strait to international maritime traffic, although recent incidents have called into question the stability of the agreement.
