They traveled on the A330 medical aircraft of the Air Force and Space’s Aeromedical Evacuation Unit (UMAER), accompanied by 81 family members.
Among the evacuated children
are six with various types of traumatic injuries, four with kidney disease, five with eye conditions, two with congenital heart defects, one with esophagitis, one with hydrocephalus, and one with a metabolic disorder.
Once in Span, the children will be distributed among hospitals in Asturias, Cantabria, Navarre, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Madrid, and Murcia.
The Ministry of Defense explained that this is “a joint operation,” the sixth in the last 18 months, with the Ministry of Health “to provide treatment to patients with various illnesses” in Spain.
Members of the UMAER Medical Unit, including pediatric intensivists and nurses, among other specialists, as well as pilots from Wing 45 and personnel from the Air Deployment Support Squadron (EADA), are participating in this operation.
