Motions supporting Cuba approved in Genoa and Rome

Rome, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) The municipal councils of the Italian city of Genoa and Rome’s 7th Municipality approved motions supporting Cuba and condemning the blockade and threats by the United States against the country, infomed Marco Papacci.

Papacci, who is also the president of the Italy-Cuba National Friendship Association (ANAIC), shared with Prensa Latina the texts in which both local government bodies express their support for the island and for the development of initiatives to lessen the consequences of the criminal U.S. measures, which violate the Cuban people’s human rights.

The document presented in Genoa was backed by representatives of the Green and Left Alliance—formed by the Green Europe and Italian Left parties—as well as the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party, among other political forces.

It reaffirms solidarity with the Cuban people and condemns the economic, commercial, and financial blockade maintained by the United States for over 60 years—”despite repeated condemnations by the international community”—which has intensified in recent months through an oil embargo and other measures of a genocidal nature.

The text describes the grave consequences of this imperialist policy, which seeks to subdue a people through economic pressure and threats of force. It notes that, despite their severity, such actions still receive limited attention, even as statements from local authorities spread across Italy.

In fact, similar resolutions supporting Cuba have recently been approved in the cities of Turin, Florence, Poggibonsi, and Crema, as well as in Rome; a motion issued centrally by the city administration in early April was joined by others adopted in several of its 15 municipalities.

The document approved by Rome’s Municipality VII also calls on top local officials—including the mayor of the capital—to publicly express their solidarity with the Cuban people and their concern regarding the effects of the U.S. economic blockade.
