Environmental alert declared for the Santiago, Chile basin

Santiago, Chile, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) – The Presidential Delegation for the Santiago Metropolitan Region has declared an Environmental Alert due to poor ventilation conditions, which are expected to cause an accumulation of pollutant particles throughout the basin.

According to the Meteorological Directorate, a frontal system will move into the country’s central zone this Saturday; however, there is no likelihood of fresh air masses moving from the Pacific coast toward the valleys and the Andean foothills.

Furthermore, temperatures are expected to be very cold, with lows of zero degrees Celsius and highs of 10 degrees throughout the weekend.

Authorities have urged the public to comply with established regulations, including a total ban on the use of wood-burning heaters or those using wood-based fuels, due to their high pollution potential.

Other measures currently in effect prohibit agricultural burning between March 1 and October 31, as well as the burning of trash and fallen leaves in urban areas.

The public is also advised to avoid or reduce strenuous physical activity and to pay special attention to young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

Because the environmental alert falls on a weekend, vehicle usage restrictions will not apply in the capital—the only exception within the package of measures designed to alleviate pollution levels.
