In a message to the Japanese authorities, leaders offered their deepest condolences to those affected and expressed confidence in the resilience of the Asian nation.
“With all our solidarity and prayers, we present to you and the families affected by today’s earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture our most sincere and heartfelt condolences,” says the text.
The co-presidents expressed their confidence that the capacity of the Japanese government and the resilience of its people will allow for a prompt and efficient recovery.
Likewise, they reiterated the accompaniment of the Nicaraguan people in these moments of difficulty and sent a message of fraternity and hope.
“In the name of this people of ours, always fraternal and supportive, and in our own name, receive you the affection and accompaniment in these hours of sorrow that, God willing, will soon be overcome,” concludes the message.
Data from the Japan Meteorological Agency specify that the earthquake occurred at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT), with an epicenter located about 10 kilometers deep under Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu island.
According to press reports, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned of the possibility of replicas of similar magnitude in the area and urged the population to remain vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions.
Local media have recorded houses collapsed, trains derailed, and people trapped under debris due to tghe earthquake that left more than 50 injured, according to public broadcaster NHK.
