Marco Papacci, president of the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC), highlighted in statements to Prensa Latina the significance of this motion, which compels Mayor Marco Russo and other local authorities to demand that the Italian government firmly reject the aggressive US policy against the Caribbean nation.
The motion urges Italy to include in its bilateral dialogue with the United States the need “to lift the restrictive measures against the Republic of Cuba.”
The initiative was spearheaded by Roberto Casella, secretary of the ANAIC chapter in Savona, and Franco Zunino, a member of ANAIC’s National Directorate, and was supported by Marco Ravera, leader of the Left Savona group, and Alessandra Gemelli, local leader of the Democratic Party (PD), among other council members.
The motion refers to the tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
The approval of this initiative is part of a broader nationwide movement in Italy, driven by ANAIC and other solidarity groups.
To date, motions supporting Cuba and opposing the US blockade have been adopted in cities such as Rome, Genoa, Florence, Turin, Crema, Cariati, and Poggibonsi, among others.
