Iran conveys conditions over Strait of Hormuz to US via Pakistan

Tehran, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Iran informed the United States of its conditions over the Strait of Hormuz through Chief of the Pakistani Army Staff Asim Munir, who is acting as a mediator between the two parties, Tasnim reported.

The news agency cited a source close to the Iranian negotiating team, which stated that Munir’s visit to Tehran aimed to ease talks and convey the Islamic Republic’s stance to Washington, not to send a message of threat from the United States.

The source explained that Tehran clearly outlined its conditions during meetings with the Pakistani high command.

Among Iran’s leading demands is that the United States resumes the so-called Islamabad Memorandum and complies with its provisions.

That article, cited by Tasnim, sees that Iran will adopt measures to guarantee the safe passage of merchant ships and will hold consultations with Oman on the future administration of the strait and associated maritime services.

On his visit to Tehran Munir met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Mohsen Rezaei.

The contacts come amid efforts to revive de-escalation mechanisms between Iran and the United States following this year’s clashes and persistent disagreements over the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
