According to statements from the Moncloa Palace, Sanchez and Guterres addressed key issues deemed essential in light of the geopolitical challenges facing today’s world.
During the meeting, the Spanish leader commended Guterres’s work at the helm of the United Nations, particularly within an international context marked by fragmentation and the questioning of multilateral institutions.
In this regard, Sanchez highlighted the Secretary-General’s efforts to preserve the United Nations’ central role as the primary forum for dialogue, cooperation, and the pursuit of shared solutions to global challenges.
Both parties also underscored the importance of strengthening international cooperation amidst a climate of polarization driven by conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, and the Middle East.
Sanchez also spoke in New York at the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) event, organized by the President of the European Council and the leaders of Canada and Kenya.
He advocated for a universal and inclusive multilateralism in the face of attempts to dismantle the rules-based order, conveying Spain’s firm commitment through its opposition to war, its defense of sustainable development, and its support for “more inclusive and legitimate” multilateral institutions.
