According to the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin), the worker was found next to a piece of drilling equipment and was taken to the Huasco Provincial Hospital in the commune of Vallenar, where his death was confirmed.
The Homicide Squad of the Investigation Police is looking for the causes and circumstances of the death, Sernageomin stated.
Los Colorados is owned by Compania Minera del Pacifico company, which is responsible for nearly all of Chile’s iron exports. On October 1, a worker lost his life while performing maintenance work at Radomiro Tomic mine, operated by the National Copper Corporation (Codelco).
Meanwhile, on September 23, another worker died in an accident at Minera Escondida in the northern Antofagasta region, a site considered one of the world’s largest copper deposits. jdt/las/car
