Panama: Former ambassador denounces US Blockade against the island

Panama City, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) Lawyer Reynaldo Rivera, who served twice as Panama's Ambassador to Cuba, denounced the blockade the United States has held on the island for more than six decades.

Rivera called on the current Government of President Jose Raul Mulino to keep its stance of support at the United Nations for the demand to end Washington’s hostile policy.

The former ambassador stated on social media that Cuba poses no threat to United States security, contrary to arguments put forward by US authorities, and stated that the pressure measures are a threat, as they affect the Cuban population fundamentally.

The former Panamanian diplomat and former Labor minister made his remarks beside the bust of Cuban independence leader and National Hero Jose Marti in this capital’s iconic Belisario Porras Park.

Rivera said the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will soon consider the issue again and urged Panama to support the Cuban initiative to end that policy.

In October 2025, the General Assembly approved, with 165 votes for, seven against, and 12 abstentions, a resolution demanding an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States. Panama was among the countries that voted for it.

The former ambassador emphasized that Panama must maintain a solidarity position with Cuba, in line with the cooperation the Caribbean nation has historically extended to this people and other countries.
