Bolivia: Social organizations postpone union march to La Paz

La Paz, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Amid high tensions, social organizations postponed a massive march to the capital until Friday to protest government measures, such as eliminating the diesel subsidy.

Speaking about the planned mass protest, peasant leader Aquilardo Caricari noted in the Tropics of Cochabamba region that, on the newly scheduled date, demonstrators will set out from Patacamaya to reach the seat of government in La Paz.

Caricari, a supporter of former President Evo Morales, explained that the mobilization will not occur this Tuesday as originally planned, as meetings in Cochabamba between the Coordinating Committee of the Six Federations of the Cochabamba Tropics and several trade unions are still pending.

With this change, the union members’ rally will take place a day after the Bolivian Workers Confederation (COB)’s expanded council meeting on October 15 in Cochabamba, which convenes its members, including confederations and departmental and regional trade unions.

The COB document specified that the leading issue will analyze the current situation in the Andean nation.

In recent days, Bolivian social sectors have publicly expressed discontent over the current economic crisis, rising prices for diesel and the basic food basket, among other consequences.
