French cinema to fill theaters in Havana and across Cuba

Havana, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) The film *Los ninos de la resistencia* (Children of Resistance)—an adaptation of a famous French comic book—will open the 27th edition of the European nation's film festival in Cuba, running from October 22 to November 4, organizers announced.

Set during the German occupation in World War II, the film’s official synopsis describes how Francois, Eusebe, and Lisa—three brave children—embark on a secret adventure to resist the Nazis in the heart of France.

Through sabotage, hidden messages, and dangerous escapes, they carry out clandestine operations right under the enemy’s nose. Audacity and friendship are their only weapons in the fight against injustice, the text highlights.

At a press conference, the French Ambassador to Cuba, Raphael Trannoy, emphasized the event’s annual presence—particularly this year—despite the current context facing the Caribbean island.

“The film festival is always a unique moment; a story is always a window open to the world, and cinema allows us to discover other realities, share emotions, and draw closer together, transcending borders and the everyday,” the diplomat underscored.

For this edition, the festival will expand beyond Havana’s theaters to reach the country’s major cities. The ambassador highlighted that the opening film is directed by Christopher Barat—who co-founded the festival alongside cultural attache Nurinant.

Seventeen films will be screened, reflecting the diversity of French cinema—including intimate and family stories, perspectives on contemporary society, and comedies, as well as a dialogue between two eras—along with four animated films that invite new generations to make new discoveries.

Sponsored by the French Embassy in Cuba, the Cinemateca de Cuba, and the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), the festival stands as the largest showcase of French cinema outside of France itself.
