During an online address to the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, Yahya noted that the said figure includes 1.82 million refugees who returned from abroad and 2.04 million internally displaced persons who returned to their areas of origin.
The official affirmed that this return reflects Syrians’ determination to build their own future, though he warned that a significant proportion of those who have returned still require humanitarian assistance.
He also noted that more than 5.5 million people remain displaced within Syria and more than 770,000 live in camps, where women and children make up three-quarters of the population.
Yahya called for continued international support for aid operations, demining efforts, and the economic investments needed to foster recovery and stability.
