More than 12,000 displaced by fighting between the DRC Army and FRN

Kinshasa, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) More than 12,000 inhabitants of Kaziba, in the province of South Kivu, have fled due to clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), it was reported.

Local sources told Actualite.CD that thousands of residents in that part of the Walungu territory have sought refuge in neighboring chiefdoms and villages, amid fighting that has persisted in the area for 10 days.

The outlet warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis, as the newly displaced people require assistance with food and access to healthcare, in addition to shelter.

“Families caught in this crisis fear for their safety—especially women, children, and the elderly. These displaced families are in urgent need of protection,” community groups emphasized.

Since the October 12 announcement of the creation of the FRN—which aims to overthrow the DRC government, including through the use of force—clashes between the rebel group and Kinshasa’s allied troops have intensified in the province of South Kivu.

The rebels also allege that the Armed Forces have used drones and heavy artillery to bombard civilian populations.
