Argentines celebrate Maradona’s birthday and support Cuba

Buenos Aires, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) To the rhythm of *son*, cumbia, percussion, and *murga*, Argentines celebrated Diego Armando Maradona’s birthday and expressed their solidarity with Cuba.

The celebration was organized by the “Zona Norte” (Northern Zone) Friendship with Cuba House—with the support of the venue’s management—to mark what would have been the soccer star’s 66th birthday. The event also served to raise funds for the “We Are With Cuba” (*Estamos con Cuba*) campaign, aimed at purchasing solar energy equipment for the Cuban people.

Marcela Cortiellas, a local councilor and member of the leadership of the “Zona Norte” Friendship House, told Prensa Latina: “Just as Cuba showed solidarity with the Argentine people and all of Latin America, it is now our turn to stand in brotherhood and solidarity with the Cuban people during these very difficult times.”

Luis Grana, who oversees the club, also spoke with Prensa Latina, expressing his admiration for the resilience of the Cuban people.

Meanwhile, the current head of the Cuban Embassy—Charge d’Affaires Leonardo Baster—addressed the attendees, reflecting on the deep friendship that existed between Maradona and the Cuban revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro.

“Consider the deep symbolism in Diego’s life and how closely it is intertwined with Cuba: Diego and Fidel, regrettably, passed away on the same day, albeit in different years. And so, this coming November 25th, we will be commemorating the tenth anniversary of the *Comandante’s* passing, while also remembering the great Diego.”

In a conversation with Prensa Latina, Rosario Cortes—who is also part of the leadership of the North Zone Friendship House (Casa de Amistad Zona Norte) and one of the event’s organizers—noted that the celebration was conceived to foster greater solidarity with the Cuban people, increase the number of those offering support, and raise awareness about the current situation on the island.

“By celebrating Maradona through an open event that brings us closer to him, we also draw closer to Cuba; it encourages more people to join this support campaign and broadens our reach,” she explained.
