Airlines cancel 2,000 U.S. flights over winter storm Elliott

Washington, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) More than 2,000 flights were canceled on Monday in the United States as a result of extremely cold temperatures and winter weather caused by winter storm Elliott.

According to the flight tracking site Flightaware, up to midday, as many as 2,244 flights were cancelled and 4,063 others were delayed to/from the United States.

On a day as many travelers were planning to return from Christmas vacations, biggest disruptions were reported at Denver International Airport, Harry Reid International in Las Vegas, Midway International in Chicago, and Baltimore/Washington International in Maryland.

Concerning Florida, the Orlando airport cancelled 55 flights (9% of those scheduled). Tampa cancelled 30 inbound flights (9%), Fort Lauderdale cancelled 26 flights (5%) and Miami cancelled 13 flights (2%).

In previous days, Friday was the worst day nationwide as airlines cancelled over 5,934 flights; meanwhile on Thursday nearly 2,700 flights were cancelled.

This winter storm in the eastern two-thirds of the nation is forecast to abate as the week advances and flights will gradually be resumed.
