China arrests officials as part of anti-corruption campaign

Beijing, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) China's Supreme People's Procuratorate today reported the arrest of Luo Baoming, vice chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the 13th National People's Congress, suspected of taking bribes.

The National Supervisory Commission investigated the case after which it was sent to the judiciary for review and prosecution, reported official sources.

Previously, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate announced the arrest, on the same charge, of Li Weiwei, deputy head of the Population, Resources and Environment Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s highest advisory body.

Luo and Li were expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) following initial investigations by that political organization’s Central Commission for Discipline Control and the National Supervisory Commission.

Since becoming president in 2012, Xi Jinping proposed more firmly to put an end to the four undesirable work styles: formalism, bureaucratism, hedonism and extravagance.

The CCP’s disciplinary body recently highlighted the 2024 progress in the anti-corruption campaign and presented targets for this year.

Xi Jinping reiterated that corruption is “the biggest threat to the Party and fighting it represents the most comprehensive type of self-reform.”

He also noted that this battle remains “a serious and complex challenge” and called for strengthening determination and confidence in this regard.

According to official data, 58 high-ranking officials were investigated last year, while more than 433,000 lower-ranking officials were sanctioned.
