This Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian responded in this way, to warnings by high-ranking US officials in Panama and El Salvador about alleged negative consequences of collaboration between Beijing and the region.
According to the spokesperson, this strategy responds to ideological prejudices and the Cold War mentality which is doomed to failure.
He also posed rhetorical questions to counter the accusations: “Who considers Latin America and the Caribbean as their ‘backyard’ and promotes the new Monroe Doctrine? Who interferes in the internal affairs of Latin American and Caribbean countries? Who uses tariffs as a tool of coercion against the region?”
Lin Jian stressed that cooperation between China and that region is framed within the South-South collaboration, based on mutual support and without geopolitical calculations.
He underscored that Beijing’s relations with Latin American countries have always followed the principles of equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit, without seeking to establish spheres of influence or targeting third parties. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently stressed that ties between China, Latin America, and the Caribbean have withstood the changes in the international scenario and are now at a new stage.
