Panama: Teachers on indefinite strike see their pay withheld

Panama City, May 12 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Education of Panama (Meduca) announced today that it will withhold the salaries of teachers who are demonstrating against Law 462, of the Social Security Fund, an arbitrary measure, as they denounce.

Since April 23, teachers of the public sector began an indefinite strike and demand the repeal of the law, which they consider affects workers and their families, privatizes the services of the Social Security Fund and hands over its funds to the banks, while predicting pensions of misery, something unacceptable.

The Meduca communique insists that “they have proceeded to withhold the payment of those educators who have not rendered the service corresponding to the position”.

They also called on the protesters to return to their classrooms, which will be open, and this is something the students need, according to the letter.

The Comptroller General of the Republic, Anel Flores, told TVN news channel that about two thousand teachers will not receive their salaries, out of a state payroll of 51,600 teachers.

According to the general secretary of the Association of Teachers of Panama, Fernando Abrego, the strike will continue in spite of all the actions of intimidation and reprisals of the Government of Jose Raul Mulino, and said that they will also demand the resignation of the head of Meduca, Lucy Molinar.
