OMSA to certify Bolivia as an FMD-free country

La Paz, May 29 (Prensa Latina) The World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA) will deliver today to Bolivia in Paris the certification of country free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, an event considered here a resounding success in view of expanding meat exports.

The president of the Scientific Commission for Terrestrial Animals, Cristóbal Zepeda, confirmed this information yesterday while speaking at the 92nd General Session of the Assembly of OMSA delegates in Paris, France.

The director of the National Agricultural Health and Food Safety Service (Senasag), Juan Miguel Quiroz, will attend this forum on behalf of Bolivia, together with representatives of the private livestock sector and the Bolivian meat industry, who will receive the certificate this Thursday at a session of the General Assembly of the international organization.

According to Bolivian authorities, this achievement is the result of years of joint work between Senasag, the livestock sector and actors linked to the National Program for the Eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease (Pronefa).

They add that the recognition highlights the work carried out in the departments of Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Tarija and parts of La Paz, Oruro and Potosi.

Livestock vaccination has been the main strategy to control outbreaks and prevent new cases, which has enabled several countries to eradicate the disease.
