Morocco to reopen embassy in Syria after years of being closed

Damascus, May 29 (Prensa Latina) A delegation of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation reportedly began a visit to Syria, where it completed preparations to reopen the embassy in this capital.

According to sources quoted by the media in Damascus, the mission’s visit responds to King Mohammed VI’s decision to restore diplomatic relations with Syria that were severed since 2012 during the war.

In a speech delivered at the 34th Arab Summit in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, on May 17, the Moroccan king announced the decision to reopen the embassy to help broaden the prospects of the historic relations.

The media reported that the current Syrian government decided to close the office of the Polisario Front, open since the 1980s.

Morocco was one of the first states to recognize the new Syrian authorities.

As soon as the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad fell, Moroccan diplomacy made contact with new Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
