Based on the government’s analysis, extreme events caused a reduction of 2.2 billion Australian dollars in national economic activity, equivalent to nearly 1.4 billion US dollars.
Between January and May, the states of New South Wales and Queensland, located on Australia’s east coast, faced flooding of historic magnitude.
Furthermore, in March, Cyclone Alfred became the first to make landfall in southeastern Queensland in half a century, aggravating the situation there.
The report also notes that other regions of the country were hit by severe storms, additional cyclones, and wildfires over the same period, all of which contributed to the high economic cost recorded.
