Mexico’s Government calls judicial election commendable

Mexico City, June 2 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican government stated that the judicial election was exemplary, conducted in a peaceful environment, and acknowledged strong citizen participation, with voter turnout meeting expectations.

“Citizens took interest, educated themselves, conducted thorough research, and cast informed votes. It was the people themselves who demanded this judicial reform to end corruption within the system,” emphasized Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s regular press briefing.

She noted that yesterday’s voter turnout (estimated between 12.57% and 13.32% by electoral authorities) met expectations and generated significant public engagement, as citizens voted for judges, magistrates, and Supreme Court justices for the first time.

In her view, this civic participation marks a firm step toward building a more transparent and accessible justice system.

“For context, the 2021 recall referendum for former presidents saw only 7% turnout from the registered voter list, while this election reached around 13%—with voters casting six to nine ballots featuring multiple choices,” she added.

In total, citizens elected 881 federal judicial positions and 1,801 local ones.

“Never in our nation’s history had the public directly shaped the judiciary,” Rodríguez affirmed, recalling that previously, the federal executive would submit Supreme Court nominations to the Senate for approval.

Following yesterday’s process—which saw around 13 million voters participate—vote counting is underway. The National Electoral Institute (INE) expects to release results for Supreme Court justices by Monday.
