During the talks, Lavrov and Fletcher paid special attention to the conflict surrounding Ukraine, emphasizing on the depoliticization of UN humanitarian activities.
The diplomats held a detailed exchange of views on some critical situations, particularly in the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Syria, and Lebanon. They also addressed general issues regarding the functioning of OCHA and the global organization’s humanitarian response system.
Lavrov and Fletcher stressed the importance of optimizing efforts, adapting them according to the norms and principles of international humanitarian law, and the need to ensure adequate financial support for operations. They also held detailed consultations with the supervising deputy minister, Sergei Vershinin, during which they considered assistance to Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar.
Fletcher was received separately by the Minister of Civil Defense, Emergencies, and Elimination of the Consequences of Natural Disasters of the Russian Federation, Aleksandr Kurenkov, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.
