The country began performing surgical robot-assisted operations on prostate cancer patients in August last year, so the extension to other conditions represents a step forward in the modernization of the country’s health system, according to the ministry responsible.
The Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Cardiopulmonary Disease Hospital Complex, which is leading this work in the country, extended its use to other areas from June 5 until yesterday, performing surgeries on six patients with inguinal hernias and three with lithiasis (gallstones). The robot-assisted procedure has advantages such as being a less invasive technique, causing less pain in the postoperative process, and ensuring a faster recovery for the patient.
Assisted by foreign specialists, Angolan professionals are learning to master this type of surgery, which in the future should be extended to gynecological, thoracic, and cardiac procedures.
With the consolidation of this technique, Angola is at the forefront of the region, as only South Africa has implemented interventions of this nature in sub-Saharan Africa.
