Data collected by that UN body stated that until May 15, some 1,342 schools were closed, 786 of which were across North Kivu, representing 12 percent of the total number of educational institutions in that territory.
Following is South Kivu with 556 institutions out of service, representing seven percent.
The clashes between the Armed Forces of the DRC and the rebels of the Congo River Alliance – the March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) displaced more than 700,000 people, 41 percent of them school children, in the territories of Minova, Sake, Masisi, and Nyiragongo since late January this year.
Due to fighting, classes were suspended in several of the communities and towns caught up in the conflict, and although in many places there were requests to return to the classroom, it has not been possible to resume with stability.
