Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office admits charges against Former President

La Paz, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) The Public Prosecutor's Office is preparing to investigate former Bolivian President Evo Morales, accused of eight crimes, including terrorism, according to a press conference announced by Attorney General Róger Mariaca.

The complaint is related to the blockades and protests being carried out by groups aligned with Morales following his exclusion from the presidential race ahead of the general elections next August. Added to this in recent days is the demand for the resignation of President Luis Arce.

Mariaca reported that the admission of the complaint against Morales calls for the initiation of an investigation so that prosecutors and the Bolivian Police can activate all investigative mechanisms and clarify the facts. “We have filed (…) a complaint for eight public action crimes initially attributed to Mr. Evo Morales Ayma, Ms. Suseth Rodríguez, and any perpetrators, co-perpetrators, accomplices, or concealers,” stated Deputy Minister of Justice César Siles.

Morales and Rodríguez are accused of terrorism, public incitement to commit crimes, attacks against the safety of public services, transportation, and the freedom to work, disobedience of constitutional resolutions, destruction and damage to state property, and obstruction of electoral processes.

According to the indictment, Morales and Rodríguez are identified as those who ordered roadblocks to force the approval of the former president’s candidacy despite the fact that he did not have a party due to rulings by the Plurinational Constitutional Court (TCP) and that registration had closed on May 19.

Siles repeatedly asked the Public Prosecutor’s Office to act swiftly, admit the complaint, assign a committee of prosecutors, and begin the investigation. He also hoped the prosecutor’s office would summon “important witness” Rudy Capquique, who until recently called himself a Morales supporter and presented an alleged recording of the former president in which he spoke of surrounding La Paz and waging a “final battle.”

On the other hand, Representative Gladys Quispe, of the Movement Toward Socialism party, a party aligned with Morales, called the audio false and fabricated. She believed it was another government maneuver to attack Morales, while emphasizing that Capquique was forced by authorities to issue this accusation in exchange for sparing him from an imminent death sentence.
