Sotomayor and Giba honored as glories of Ibero-American sports

Madrid, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) Two emblematic sports figures, Cuban high jumper Javier Sotomayor and Brazilian volleyball player Giba, were honored as glories of Ibero-American sport on Wednesday.

Sotomayor was presented with the GLORIA Legend of Ibero-American Sport Award. The reasons are more than eloquent as his 2.45-meter high jump record remains undisturbed even more than three decades later.

Born in Limonar, in the western Cuban province of Matanzas, on October 13, 1967, Sotomayor enjoyed a brilliant career in athletics.

The jury of the GLORIA Awards, an initiative held for the first time in history by SSM-Sports Summit Madrid, honors him as a legend.

Gilberto Godoy Filho, known as Giba, and one of the great pillars of Brazilian volleyball, was an Olympic champion and won the Olympics Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Athens 2004, and a silver medal in Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He was a three-time world champion and the best volleyball player in history.

Giba received the GLORIA Award for Education and Training in Sports for his work after retirement.

An estimated 20 prominent figures were awarded across 13 categories at a ceremony held at the Albeniz Theater in Madrid.
