The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that 21,9 million people suffer from this scourge.
Venezuela, Colombia, and Haiti are the main centers of displacement in the Americas, with 8,1 million, 7,4 million, and 1,4 million displaced people, respectively, the report stated.
This figure of 21,9 million includes 1,2 million refugees in other countries, 4,7 million asylum seekers, 9,5 million internally displaced persons, and other people in similar situations.
UNHCR points out that these are divided “between asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, returnees, stateless persons, and other persons of interest to UNHCR in the Americas.
By the end of 2024, the number of displaced persons reached 21,9 million, a statistic that represents 17% of the global total of 123,2 million.
The online newspaper Haiti Libre reminds us that the situation in Haiti is particularly alarming, with armed gangs controlling more than 85% of the capital and other provincial cities, plunging the country into chaos.
Nearly half of Haiti’s population needs humanitarian assistance, and more than five million people suffer from acute food insecurity.
