Lula made the first visit of an international dignitary to the former president, who was also banned from holding public office.
After participating in the Mercosur Summit, the Brazilian president went to the department of San José 1111, in the neighborhood of Constitución, where a large number of journalists, photographers, cameramen and supporters of journalism awaited his arrival.
In order to make this visit possible, Cristina’s lawyers had to ask for authorization from the Federal Oral Court No. 2, thus fulfilling one of the unusual requirements imposed by justice on the now prisoner on June 17 when she was placed under house arrest, which states that only a list of persons (family members, lawyers, doctors and guardians) may freely visit it.
The authorization signed by Judge Jorge Gorini specifies that during the visit the former president must give “strict compliance to the rule of conduct” that was imposed on her which consists in being “refrain from any behaviour which may disturb the peace of the neighbourhood and/or disturb the peaceful coexistence of its inhabitants”.
Lula, who also suffered political imprisonment, expressed his total support for Cristina once the Supreme Court of Justice’s decision confirmed the conviction against her ex-dignitary whom he called immediately after the announcement.
“I observed with satisfaction the serenity and determination with which Cristina faces this adverse situation and her determination to continue fighting,” posted Lula, and highlighted the advice he gave her during the dialogue: “I told her of the importance of staying strong in these difficult times”.
