Uruguay: High demand for cold weather shelters continues

Montevideo, July 6 (Prensa Latina) More than 2,500 homeless people received assistance in Uruguay on the twelfth day of operations to fight the severe cold.

Over 2,590 people were assisted in the shelter system of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides) and in evacuation centers nationwide managed by other institutions.

On the last recorded night, 191 transfers were made by the Police, while health teams provided 21 medical assistance services at the designated centers.

The coordination between Mides and the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Public Health, and other institutions continues.

It is said that 80 percent of the total capacity of the Montevideo Evacuation Centers was occupied, with 440 people housed out of a total of 555 available spaces, according to the National Emergency System.

It was informed that 1,277 people slept at Mides shelters in Montevideo and 770 in other parts of the country.

Although there has been an improvement in weather conditions, nights and early mornings continue to be very cold throughout the country, so the operation will continue at least until next Tuesday.
