Germany questions Israel and US for attacks on Iran

Berlin, July 6 (Prensa Latina) A report by the Scientific Advisory Office of the Bundestag (German Parliament) expressed serious doubts about the legal justification for the Israeli and US attacks on Iranian facilities, according to the Morgen Zeitung website.

The document, which publishes a 54-page analysis requested by German Left Party MP Ulrich Toden, backed by international law experts, explains that Israel did not prove that Iran was close to producing nuclear weapons, an essential requirement for invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter on self-defense.

It also stated that in the end, Tehran’s firm intention to use atomic weapons against Israel was not proven, and Operation Rising Lion lacked justification as a last resort to prevent an imminent threat.

According to analysts, US intervention would only be legal if the Israeli attacks were validated, while the collective defense argument put forward by Washington is unsustainable.

Toden described the findings as a slap in the face to the German government, which has tacitly supported Israeli actions.

The report comes weeks after the Israeli attacks of June 13 and an Iranian response hours later following the US intervention on June 22.

Meanwhile, local experts link the document to European pressure to avoid escalation in the Middle East and German skepticism about US strategy in the region.

The report also fueled debate about Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran insists is peaceful.
