Turkey denounces cover-up of failure at Ukrainian nuclear power plant

Ankara, July 6 (Prensa Latina) The Turkish press revealed alleged moves by the Security Service of Ukraine to conceal a technical failure at Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear plant, according to the Turkish newspaper Aydinlik.

A document drafted in March 2024 by the regional division of the Security Service of Ukraine mentions that Colonel Andrey Semeniuk, head of that security office in Yuzhnoukrainsk, prevented a technical failure caused by negligence from being included in International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports.

The text suggests that the failure could have occurred in the reactor itself or in associated critical safety systems due to violations of operating conditions, but this was never reflected in the IAEA assessments.

It is unclear, according to the newspaper, whether the IAEA was misled by the officer in charge and his team or whether they deliberately concealed the failure for political reasons.

The document also reveals that Semeniuk was nominated for a medal for this operation.

According to the newspaper, the issue is not only nuclear safety, but also the transparency, reliability, and impartiality of international oversight mechanisms.

According to the document, Ukraine not only hides its nuclear safety problems, but extends this cover-up to international reports, Aydinlik writes.
