Cuba’s hero pays tribute to Che Guevara in Italian city of Collegno

Rome, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) Gerardo Hernandez, Hero of the Republic of Cuba, along with the highest authorities of the northern Italian city of Collegno, paid tribute to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara in the square that bears his name, a spokesperson said on Sunday.

Marco Papacci, president of the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC), told Prensa Latina that, as part of his visit to this country, organized by that solidarity group, Hernandez was received by Collegno Mayor Matteo Cavallone on Saturday.

After a tour of the site, Hernandez, who is currently the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), attended a ceremony in front of the monument in memory of Che Guevara and the fallen combatants in Bolivia.

Cavallone stressed the relevance of the heroic guerrilla’s example and work.

Gerardo Hernandez, who is also a lawmaker and a member of the Cuban Council of State, and one of the five Cuban heroes who suffered long years in US prison for their struggle in defense of their country, spoke about the current situation in Cuba, amid an escalation of US aggression against the revolutionary process.

The mayor reaffirmed his support for the Cuban Revolution and condemned the criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on that country by the United States, which violates human rights, as well as the unjust and infamous island’s inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.

During his visit to Italy, which will conclude on Wednesday, July 9, Gerardo Hernandez complied with a broad plan of activities in Rome, as well as in several cities in the regions of Campania, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Piedmont, including his participation in the ANAIC’s National Day, as well as several meetings with friends of Cuba.
