With 17 of the 26 provinces affected by the epidemic, the authorities of the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare are advancing a plan of emergency measures to try to halt the spread of the disease, particularly in Kinshasa, which is the most densely populated city.
The capital has also been affected by floods that have created conditions conducive to contagion, destroying health and drinking water supply infrastructures as well as worsening hygiene conditions.
In addition, there are situations generated by the armed conflict in the east of the country, where violence forces people to leave their homes to live often in overcrowded conditions, without adequate health care, poor food and poor hygiene.
Two new cholera treatment centres have been established in Kinshasa, which, together with the three already existing ones, will enable a more rapid response to emerging cases.
According to Health Minister Roger Kamba, eight new treatment units are expected to be opened.
