Death toll rises from armed clashes in southern Syria

Damascus, July 14 (Prensa Latina) The death toll from violent clashes in the southern Syrian province of Sweida rose to more than fifty, amid calls to halt the fighting and consolidate civil peace.

According to local authorities, intense clashes between Bedouin tribal groups and militants from the Druze community left 50 dead in the last 48 hours, including two children.

The death toll includes 34 residents of Sweida, militants, two children, as well as 10 tribal fighters and six Defense Ministry personnel.

Previously, the Ministries of Defense and the Interior sent military reinforcements to Sweida, including various types of weapons and dozens of troops, to support the attacked security checkpoints.

This escalation comes amid incidents of mutual detention between local militants and tribal militias in the region, following the attack on a young man from Sweida by a tribal group near the town of Al-Masmiya.

The young man was beaten and robbed before being released in critical condition.

The highest authority of the Druze community in Syria, Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hajri, announced his rejection of the entry of government security forces and called for an immediate and swift international protection, given the serious situation.jrr/ arm/mem/fm
