Cuba’s Prime Minister extols resilience of tourism vs blockade

Havana, July 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero affirmed that the country’s tourism remains a strategic sector for the national economy, although its development faces serious restrictions resulting from the blockade imposed by the United States.

During his speech before the permanent committees of the National Assembly of People’s Power, the head of government asserted that it is no coincidence “that the enemies of the Revolution have been determined to destroy tourism, because they know what prosperous tourism represents for the country: income generation, international projection, and economic consolidation.”

Marrero denounced that despite proclaiming itself “the land of freedom,” the United States maintains a law that prohibits its citizens from traveling to Cuba as tourists, prevents them from purchasing vacation packages, or using charter flights organized by Cuban companies.

In addition to the direct impact, he noted that the blockade has extraterritorial effects that discourage tourism from Europe and other regions.

Despite this situation, he emphasized that in recent years, progress has been made in the gradual recovery of the sector, with a focus on material resources and improving humane treatment and customer service.

A key point in this recovery, the Prime Minister said, was the reactivation of the income-sharing scheme within the tourism sector, which allows each business group to manage part of its profits to reinvest in improvements, including workerforce housing.

The head of government emphasized that tourism not only contributes to its own profits but also boosts other economic sectors in the nation, such as agriculture and the food industry, by financing raw materials and boosting national production.

“When tourism does well, the entire country wins,” he concluded.
