This is a strong sign of European countries’ commitment to acting against the impunity of those responsible for the violence in Haiti, according to a note from the online newspaper Haiti Libre.
In one of his social media posts, gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, known as Barbecue, blamed France, along with the United States and Canada, for the hardships experienced by the Haitian people.
The debt imposed by France to recognize the independence of Haiti, the first Black republic, delayed its development for 200 years.
In this context, gangs in Haiti continue to expand their power today, a clear sign that they care little about the sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, and those recently adopted by the United Nations (UN).
In recent hours, the UN Security Council decided to impose targeted sanctions against the Haitian gang coalitions Viv Ansanm and Grand Grif. The measure comes after the groups were officially designated as terrorist organizations by the Trump administration last May.
This resolution against the two groups aims to combat terrorism and criminal activities that are destabilizing the country and the region.
The sanctions include asset freezes, a travel ban, and an arms embargo, all aimed at limiting the operational capabilities of these groups.
The UN hopes the sanctions will help isolate these groups and reduce their ability to finance their illicit activities. jrr/arm/mem/joe
