According to a statement issued by the Spanish Foreign Ministry, although the vote has no binding effect, it ignores the fundamental principles and provisions of international law and is contrary to the July 19, 2024, Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice, which determines that the occupation is illegal.
The text emphasizes that this idea also undermines the foundations for the implementation of a two-state solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people, peace in the region, and the security of Israel, by ignoring the commitments made by Israel and Palestine since the Madrid Conference and the Oslo Process.
“Spain reiterates its condemnation of the expansion of settlements, which are illegal under international law, and of any action aimed at hindering a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” it stated.
It also stated that it renews its call for the release of the hostages, a cessation of hostilities, and massive access of humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip, in tune with the principles of international humanitarian law.
It also says that “Spain reiterates its firm support for the Two-State Solution as the only way to achieve peace.”
