According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between July 13 and 19, 34 new suspected cases of cholera were reported in six departments, most of which were linked to IDP sites, where access to clean water and sanitation is limited.
Health authorities identified five hotspots of active transmission, particularly in Port-au-Prince and in the northern regions.
OCHA workers continue to carry out essential cholera prevention and control activities.
The Haitian Times online newspaper remembered that Haiti went more than a century without a case of cholera until 2010, until UN peacekeepers from Nepal contaminated the Artibonito River, thus spread the disease rapidly, and sickening some 820,300 people and killing nearly 10,000.
After years of coordinated public health efforts, Haiti reported its last confirmed case in January 2019.
The World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization declared the disease eliminated in February 2022.
