Germany considers sanctions against Israel for Gaza offensive

Berlin, August 5 (Prensa Latina) Zimmie Moller, vice president of the Social Democratic Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag, urged her government to consider sanctions against Israel, including a partial suspension of arms exports.

In a letter to members of her party, Moller stated that the Israeli government will do little without external pressure, after visiting the region with German Chancellor Johann Wadephul.

She criticized Tel Aviv’s statements on humanitarian aid to Gaza as unconvincing.

The call shows a shift in German rhetoric, although without concrete changes in policy.

Analysts attribute Berlin’s caution to the historical weight of the Holocaust and the influence of pro-Israeli media.

The European Commission recommended on July 28 excluding Israel from the Horizon Europe program, citing violations of international law in Gaza.

The Israeli army launched Operation Chariots of Gideon on May 18, with the stated goal of annihilating Hamas and rescuing hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised full military control over Gaza.
