Anwar Ibrahim met with Cambodian Defense Minister Gen. Tea Seiha and Thai Acting Defense Minister Gen. Natthaphon Narkphanit, ahead of the final meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held in this capital since Monday.
The Malaysian president said he will fulfill both countries’ wishes, which he sees as currently committed to ensuring the conditions for full compliance with the ceasefire.
He stated that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’s Defense Attache Observer Team will help monitor the situation.
Malaysia was chosen as the neutral host country for the talks between these nations, which have been at odds over a long-standing territorial dispute, and holds ASEAN’s chairmanship in 2025.
The current Thailand-Cambodia conflict started on July 24, with mutual accusations of having fired the first shot.
It claimed the lives of 43 people on both sides, including several civilians, in addition to causing dozens of injuries and the displacement of nearly 300,000 people.
