According to a presidential statement, at the event that will take place at Nkowankowa Stadium, Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Ramaphosa will deliver a speech under the theme “Building Resilient Economies for All,” a direct link to the South African G20 Presidency’s agenda on women’s empowerment.
This date commemorates the legacy of the historic demonstration that occurred on August 9, 1956, in South Africa, when about 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings (Government) to protest against the expansion of pass laws and the Urban Areas Act under apartheid.
Led by figures such as Lillian Ngoyi and Helen Joseph, the mobilization represents a milestone in the fight for gender equality and against racial segregation.
This year’s activities focus on promoting women’s effective participation in the economy and society, strengthening mechanisms to prevent gender-based violence through education and social mobilization, and fostering multisectoral collaboration for inclusive development.
