Cambodia calls Thailand’s accusations irresponsible

Phnom Penh, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Cambodia flatly rejected and called Thailand's accusations of the alleged laying of new landmines "baseless and irresponsible" after Thai soldiers were injured in a border incident.

To date, “no credible or transparent investigation has been carried out into the incident mentioned by the Thai side,” Secretary of State and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Chum Sounry, emphasized at a press conference.

Cambodia urges restraint and the avoidance of premature public accusations, which could undermine genuine trust and erode the spirit of the ceasefire at a time when constructive dialogue is urgently needed, Sounry said.

The Cambodian official insisted on urging the neighboring nation to fully comply with the commitments made at the recent extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee, and in particular to maintain current troop positions and refrain from carrying out any movements or patrols toward the other side’s positions.

He also remembered that the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMMA) had offered a clear explanation the day before and also refuted the statement issued that same day by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In its statement, the CMMA emphasized that “Cambodia’s position is unequivocal: We have not laid, nor will we lay, any new landmines” and recalled that over three decades, more than one million landmines and nearly three million explosive remnants of war have been cleared in the country.

Regarding the current situation on the border, Cambodian Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata stated that the front line remains calm, although Cambodian forces remain on high alert.
