The Sweida 24 website released images of the massive rally, which took place amid social division and a context of national debate on decentralization and reconciliation initiatives.
In the images, Druze and Israeli flags were seen, while the national flag was absent. Participants held signs with statements denouncing the violations committed in the province, as well as signs with statements critical of the current Syrian government.
The protest comes after the violence that broke out in that governorate in mid-July, in which at least 1,600 people died in clashes between local Druze militias and tribal armed groups.
Furthermore, crimes against civilians were documented, including executions, house burnings, and kidnappings.
Damascus denounced Israel’s attempt to exploit internal divisions and manipulate the Druze community to hinder the country’s stability, while reaffirming that all citizens enjoy equal rights and duties within the framework of national unity.
Sweida province is currently facing a critical humanitarian situation marked by a lack of food and the displacement of nearly 200,000 people.
Despite reaching a ceasefire agreement in July with international mediation, the situation remains fragile, marked by violations of the agreement and humanitarian blockades that hinder the entry of basic aid.
